The International Anti-Speciesist League (L.I.A. for short) is a non-profit organisation under Belgian law whose aims are to promote anti-speciesism, veganism and intersectionalism both within civil society and across the three branches of government (executive, legislative and judicial).
The L.I.A. is a political, internationalist, intersectional and ecological association that is undeniably rooted in the socialist tradition, whose original aims are to campaign for social equality and for a reduction in inequalities and oppression (which affect not only some human beings but also all non-human beings in this world).
The League favours a systemic strategy, as it believes that speciesist ideology stems primarily from the political, economic and cultural structures of our societies.
Furthermore, the L.I.A. is intrinsically intersectional in its operations and recruitment, and declares its solidarity with all social liberation organisations. It therefore stands in solidarity with all movements fighting against all forms of oppression and discrimination affecting sentient beings, both human and non-human (racism, genderism, patriarchy, masculinism, adultism, ableism, classism, etc.).
The L.I.A. campaigns alongside organisations fighting against all forms of oppression and systemic discrimination based on structural mechanisms of domination. It works to foster convergence, coherence and solidarity amongst social liberation struggles in order to build a common political front against oppression. Consequently, sentient non-human animals should take their place in our societies as partners in the struggle alongside all those oppressed and discriminated against by the same adversary: human supremacism, embodied primarily by white, Western, able-bodied men. The aim is therefore to free sentient non-human animals from their ‘animalised’ status and establish them as non-human legal persons entitled to all the essential functional rights granted to human persons.
Furthermore, as a non-profit organisation (ASBL), the League has legal personality, a key asset in establishing its credibility. It can thus take legal action to ensure the fulfilment of its statutory objectives and, in doing so, assert its autonomy, transparency and independence.
It therefore aims to be a responsible partner with strong local roots close to its members. It prioritises effective action.
The League carries out this work within the framework of volunteering. No special benefits of any kind are granted to directors or those holding specific positions.
Finally, it also aims to centralise and unify national and/or international anti-speciesist associations that wish to join it.
The billions of non-human animals, both on land and at sea, who are appropriated, mistreated, exploited and sacrificed in an atrocious, premature and unjust manner every day across the world compel us to act.
The International Anti-Speciesist League is dedicated to responding to this urgent call and thus to combating speciesist ideology. It aims for nothing less than the abolition of speciesism in order to restore the dignity, respect and fundamental rights of all living beings presumed to be sentient who share our planet Earth—rights that should never have been taken from them in the first place.
The association was founded in 2025 in Brussels, Belgium, by Elaine COLLARD and Alain SCARCEZ.
