Most people wait to be offered the job that would fulfil their deepest aspirations, but very few are prepared to roll up their sleeves and create it for themselves.
Remember John Fitzgerald Kennedy’s famous quote from his inauguration speech on 20 January 1961: ‘Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.’ We could adapt this as follows: “Ask not what anti-speciesism can do for you, but ask what you can do for anti-speciesism.”
Elaine and I have decided to create our ideal job and we are recruiting people to work at the L.I.A.
Of course, these are, initially, volunteer roles, but it is entirely up to us – and to you – to commit yourselves sufficiently to contribute to the success of our organisation, thereby enabling it to increase its visibility and effectiveness, and to raise enough funds in the future to be in a position to offer paid roles.
Many organisations have achieved this. Why not us?
Today, it is Elaine and Alain who take on, at least in part, almost all of these tasks, with the occasional and much-appreciated help of a few dedicated individuals.
Having convictions, fighting for greater justice and equality, and being vegan are all very well. Taking concrete action in the political arena to help animals escape their condition of slavery is much better for non-human animals.
