An observation of archipelisation

Numerous anti-speciesist associations are active in Belgium and are achieving results:

Bite Back, 269 Libération animale, Sea Shepherd, Paul Watson Foundation, Belgian Anti-fur Movement, Same Rights All Animals, Extinction Rebellion Animal, Suppression des expériences sur les animaux, Justice for the Animals, Animal Rights, Veganarchy, Gaïa etc. and now the Anti-Speciesist League!

Although united around anti-speciesist ethics, they all pursue specific objectives and have their own methods of action.

With the exception of Gaia, the associations have a modest number of members, which they sometimes struggle to mobilise.

This archipelago-like structure of anti-speciesist associations openly harms the animal cause and has deleterious consequences on the associations themselves:

  • a certain isolation of the associations;
  • a limited societal and media impact of the actions taken;
  • a recurring difficulty in mobilising members;
  • high turnover of active members;
  • inevitable overlapping of respective agendas;
  • rapid burnout of managers and activists;
  • a feeling of ineffectiveness, uselessness and inefficiency among some members;
  • a marginalisation of the actions taken among the general public, coupled with more easily fuelled criticism;
  • a mutual lack of understanding of the objectives pursued;
  • a loss of energy, efficiency and synergy.

It is in an attempt to overcome these dysfunctions, to unite our efforts and ultimately increase our efficiency, that the League has created :
